The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce is honoring K-9 police and fire teams by spending Earth Day cleaning and shining the town’s Crossroads Dog Park.

The event will begin a 10 a.m. April 22 at the park, 155 E. Knox Road. All community members are welcome to participate.

The event is part of the challenge that the Gilbert Leadership program puts out to its classes each year to begin and complete a project that impacts the community in positive way.

Business and community leaders make up the class, and they work as a team to organize, fundraise and finalize the project.

This year’s class chose to honor the efforts of the K-9 units that work in the town’s fire and public safety departments, according to the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce.

Class XXV has focused its efforts to promote to the dog park, which is not well-known, in the southeast area of Crossroads Park.

The class has raised money for the project through community donations and other fundraising activities.

The plan for the park includes planting new trees along its edge, adding decorative fire hydrants inside the park and installing a bone-shaped bench, with a mural painted by class members inside the park.
