City of Charleston adopts new Stormwater Design Standards Manual

The City of Charleston recently adopted a new Stormwater Design Standards Manual (SWDSM) after a 10-1 vote.

The manual is aimed at providing guidance on the design of the city’s stormwater system.

The SWDSM sets out the procedures and policies that will be utilized by the Department of Stormwater Management to implement the city’s ordinances concerning stormwater, zeroing in on resolving issues associated with pre-construction and permitting, construction, and post-construction of various public infrastructure projects within the city.

Several stakeholders including private-sector engineers, design professionals, and Charleston Metro Chamber members participated throughout the policymaking process. The group will have frequent meetings throughout the year to review the implementation. An extensive assessment has also been committed by the City of Charleston by February 2021

The 218-page Stormwater Design Standards Manual and a one-page fact sheet about it are also available at the Charleston website.
