Greater Columbia Region named Great Defense Community

The Greater Columbia Region takes pride in being one of the five communities across the country to be named as a 2019 Great American Defense Community.

The honor is given to communities and regions in America that provided great support to service members and military families.

Communities are selected via a nomination process keeping in mind the following criteria: educational and employment opportunities, community building and integration, support and collaboration, and family support.

The Columbia Chamber’s nomination of the Greater Columbia Region rooted in the region’s programs and partnerships which furthered the community’s relationship with the military, drawing strength from the collective effort and commitment of various organizations and individuals supporting the service members, their families, veterans and retirees.

According to Columbia Chamber’s president and CEO, Carl Blackstone, being named as a Great American Defense Community “is a fitting tribute to the many business and community partners who work diligently to embrace the military men and women serving in the greater Columbia area”

Greater Columbia is home to over 21,390 service members, 19,880 retirees, 97,470 veterans and has supported 54,250 jobs, generated $2.9 Billion labor income and has brought $6.6 Billion annual economic impact.

A celebration breakfast was held on Wednesday at the Brookland Banquet and Conference Center which hosted by the Columbia Chamber.

The event is also a way of sending the community’s appreciation to its supporters such as City of Columbia Government, Sun Solutions, Navy Federal Credit Union, AllSouth Federal Credit Union, Richland County, Dominion Energy, University of South Carolina, to name a few.
