Proposed in 1996, the Saluda Riverwalk’s Phase 1 is set to open in 2019 together with the Boyd Island Sanctuary at the convergence of the Saluda and Broad rivers.

“This is going to knock people’s socks off,” Mike Dawson, executive director of the River Alliance, said. “It’s drop-dead gorgeous here, and no one can get to it. Now there is going to be public access."

Additionally, the 3-mile extension of the Three Rivers Greenway would connect the Broad River to Columbia’s Riverfront Park, and the Saluda River from Richland County to Lexington County.

“We are going to try and connect up as many Lexington County neighborhoods as we can,” Dawson said.

Phase 2 is forecast to take two years. The Riverwalk will have wooden boardwalks, a parking area, picnic tables, park ranger stations, bathrooms and will be well-lighted.

Other than connecting the community and providing access to the Saluda River, businesses opportunities may also be brought in by this Riverwalk in Columbia.
