SCPA accepts applicants for next Port Ambassador class

South Carolina Ports Authority has announced its 2018-19 Port Ambassadors class, which consists of 25 participants who will learn how ports operate.

Jordi Yarborough, SCPA's senior vice president of external affairs, said port ambassadors are exposed to the inner workings of the port and learn how the port is a major driver of economic prosperity in the state.

"A 2015 study conducted by the University of South Carolina's Darla Moore School of Business showed the port is, directly and indirectly, responsible for one in 11 jobs in the state," Yarborough said in an interview with Palmetto Business Daily. "As a port ambassador, you get to see first hand how the port connects businesses to the global economy."

Yarborough said over the nine-month program, delegates hear from speakers covering the port's operations, maritime industry partnerships, and port-dependent businesses.

"The program is limited to 25 participants, making it ideal for in-depth discussions that lead to a better understanding of the topics discussed throughout the course of the program," Yarborough said.

Yarborough said the Port Ambassador Program offers a diverse group of South Carolina leaders an opportunity to meet and hear from experts through a series of full- and half-day educational sessions and tours.

"The program was developed to increase public awareness and understanding of SCPA’s strategic plan and foster support for the port’s key statewide initiatives and activities," Yarborough said.

Yarborough said the Port Ambassadors program consists of delegates nominated by members of the Review and Oversight Commission of the SCPA, members of the SCPA Board of Directors, and the SCPA senior management team.

"The ideal candidate is an active and proven leader in their respective profession and community," Yarborough said. "The class has a broad state-wide representation."
