The Spartanburg City Council has approved the construction of the new T.K. Gregg Community Center.

Scheduled to have its groundbreaking on Nov. 30, the council gave its approval for a not-to-exceed bid of just over $11.9 million Harper General Contractors.

The center will consist of community rooms, a walking track, a fitness center and an indoor basketball gym. It will also include two indoor pools: one for competitive and exercise lap swimming and the other one for water therapy and swimming lessons.

The city looks forward to earning New Markets Tax Credits as an additional source of fund to aid the project and bring the city's outstanding portion down to $9.1-$9.4 million. Issuing bonds covered by future City Hospitality Tax revenue are another avenue to help finance the construction of the new center.

There is no tax increase intended to aid the funding of the project.
