The Apache Junction Police Department has received $54,000 in Governor’s Office of Highway Safety grants which it will use toward addressing speeding and drinking and driving.
The department’s efforts on cracking down on speeding include the purchase of a mobile speed alert radar sign.
The city’s police department also took part in the annual Governor’s Office of Highway Safety statewide DUI enforcement campaign on Nov. 29 at the state capital. The campaign, a partnership between the Governor’s Office, statewide law enforcement agencies and state, county and city agencies is an effort to keep Arizona’s highways safe during the holidays.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) offers the following tips to prevent drunk drivers, especially during the holiday season:
***Plan a safe ride and designate a sober driver ahead of time if you will be drinking;
***Call a taxi, friend or family members or use public transportation instead of driving if you have been drinking;
***If someone has been drinking and tries to drive, take their keys and help them arrange for a sober ride; and
***Report any impaired drivers to local law enforcement.
