Coastal Community Foundation has named Nafisa Rahimberganova the winner of this year's Barkley Leadership Scholarship.
The four-year renewable scholarship is granted to one student annually. The winner is selected based on community service, academics, integrity, generosity and leadership. Rahimberganova kept a 4.5 grade-point average while studying at Charleston County’s Academic Magnet High School and still found time to give back to the community despite hardships and demanding work and school responsibilities.
“My parents have sacrificed everything so I could receive a good education and equal rights; and be introduced to this country of prosperity and opportunities,” Rahimberganova said.
She has volunteered with organizations such as Pet Helpers and served as a tutor with North Charleston Creative Arts Elementary School. She also sprinted for the track and field team and was co-captain of the speech and debate club.
She will attend the University of South Carolina Honors College to study biology, and plans to earn a degree at Columbia Medical School and eventually work as a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon to “help less fortunate kids whose parents cannot afford medical treatment.”
She also intends to work with the organization Doctors Without Borders.
