The City of Greenville recently hosted a kickoff celebration for the opening of the new expanded trolley system.

The expanded service includes four route areas: Arts West, Augusta, Heart of Main and Top of Main. The new sections opened the evening of Aug. 3.

The trolley system was enlarged due to the popularity of the downtown route, which last year served 118,000 passengers.

Greenlink purchased two more trolleys and plotted out three more routes to access popular retail and restaurant areas, as well as parks and other leisure destinations. The Main Street route was also modified to better serve the new routes. Greenlink worked with the Public Works Department and the state Department of Transportation to determine safe trolley-stop locations as well.

The Arts West and Augusta routes are partially financed from hospitality tax revenues that must be used for tourism-related services.  These two routes will be seasonal, running only from May through October. The Heart of Main and Top of Main routes will run all year.

All four routes operate on Thursday and Friday evenings from 6-11 p.m.; on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and on Sundays from 1-8 p.m.
