Charleston is the top city in the country, as ranked by Travel + Leisure readers, and the second-best city in the world.
San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, tops honors in the readers' poll.
Charleston has been among the best cities in the country for five years in a row, based on Travel + Leisure reader polls.
“All the elements are there to make it a city that will remain in your heart long after you’ve left,” said one Travel + L commenter.
Part of Charleston's charm lies in the landscape, historical landmarks, quality dining destinations and family-run independent shops.
Travel + Leisure asked readers to rank cities based on landmarks, culture, arts, dining, the friendliness of the city, value and shopping options. Charleston was the only U.S. city to make it to the global top 10 list.
“Charleston is that rare destination that, on paper, seems to have it all — and then totally lives up to the hype,” T+L writer Jacqueline Gifford said.
