The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce awarded 25 scholarships to area school students planning to attend Trident Technical College.
The Accelerate Greater Charleston 2 Scholarships program has granted 127 scholarships since the program began four years ago. Each scholarship covers $1,000 per semester (or $2,000 per year) for up to two years.
“This scholarship is funded completely through our business community who have invested in the Chamber’s Accelerate Greater Charleston 2 Campaign,” Chamber President and CEO Bryan Derreberry said. “The business community is committed to creating a talent pipeline locally. The Chamber, along with Trident Tech, will be their partners for the next two years, working to ensure their success at Tech and beyond.”
A Talent Demand Study updated last year has determined which jobs are growing in the area and which skills will be in demand, which helps the Chamber determine fields to boost with scholarship offerings in an effort to increase the talent pool in the future.
“For me, this scholarship served as a huge motivator,” Faith Huff, a 2014 scholarship recipient and 2017 graduate of Trident Tech, said. “It felt like besides my friends and family, I also had a support group in the Chamber of Commerce standing behind me, encouraging me and helping me achieve my goals that could have been otherwise unobtainable.”
