The Charleston Regional Business Journal has published a story detailing how the Talent Demand Study, originally commissioned by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce and the Charleston Regional Development Alliance in 2014 and then updated in 2016, highlighted the need for tech workers and tech learning.
The Charleston Chamber has worked with companies and schools to launch apprenticeship programs and other learning initiatives.
“[T]he region often struggles to get kids interested in technology and [information technology] in the first place, and colleges are then not producing enough of those graduates,” Mary Graham, chief advancement officer for the Chamber, said in a statement.
Graham noted that changing high school curriculum is hard. Schools, therefore, need to know students truly have an interest in IT-related fields and courses before they will change their curriculum to offer them. These schools would also need good teachers who are knowledgeable on the subject.
“It’s very hard to find teachers that can teach computer programming, for example, and keep them in a classroom, because if they’re really good at computer programming, private industry is going to snatch them up in a heartbeat and pay them a lot more money than they’re going to earn as a teacher,” Graham said.
