Beaufort County’s Civic Engagement and Outreach Section and Communications and Accountability Department will hold an informational meeting to discuss the U.S. Highway 278 widening and Jenkins Island improvements at 5 p.m. on May 23.
The meeting will take place at Hilton Head Island High School, located at 70 Wilborn Road.
The project involves widening the road to six lanes, as well as installing traffic signals and median U-turn operations in two places – Blue Heron Point Road and near Jenkins Island Road.
Colin Klinton, the Traffic and Transportation Engineer for the county, said the renovations will occur because of the high volume of traffic and congestion in the area. The route is the main way people head to Hilton Head for vacation.
“The purpose of the project is to improve operational efficiency along U.S. 278, while also providing safe and efficient access to local communities with minimum disruption to through traffic,” Kinton said in a statement. "Attending this meeting is a great way for residents to provide feedback and learn about the project overview and proposed design."
