According to the Blackbaud Index, which tracks charitable giving across the United States, charitable giving increased during March 2017, with online giving seeing the biggest boost.
The index tracked $20.8 billion in overall charitable contributions during the month, including reports from 6,377 organizations. Overall giving fell in February by less than half a percent, but March reported a recovery and increase of 1.9 percent compared to the same time frame during 2016.
Online giving, which is also reported by the index, saw a more dramatic increase in contributions. During March 2017 as compared to the same timeframe last year, online giving throughout the nation increased 10 percent. The numbers come from the reports of 4,033 nonprofit organizations, and represent approximately $2.1 billion dollars in online donations.
The index is based on numbers from three-month moving averages and compared year-over-year. Blackbaud provides the information to the public via its website. In addition to the overall giving index, the company offers benchmark calculators and historical data to help organizations understand charitable giving trends.
The index data can be viewed by charitable subset, organization size, or other methods to allow a deeper understanding of the trends. Methodology for the index is also available.
