Sophie Winnick, editor-in-chief of Legend, the yearbook at Wando High School, has been named the 2017 South Carolina Scholastic Journalist of the Year.

Winnick was one of many students from across the state who submitted a portfolio of journalistic achievements during their time in high school, as well as several letters of recommendation from faculty members.

She was also the lead student on a partnership project with the Town of Mount Pleasant Planning and Development Department that won an international Hermes Creative Award.

“She brims with self-confidence," said Wanda High School Yearbook Adviser Phillip Caston. "There is literally no task she believes she cannot accomplish in yearbook; from hanging off the side of a sailboat in the Charleston Harbor to snap an award-winning picture, to trying to carry a massive speaker by herself at yearbook distribution day."

Winnick will attend the University of South Carolina next year where she will double major in international business and sports management. She aspires to be a professional sports agent for her career.
