South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) experienced record-setting container volume in January, handling 105,000 pier containers and 185,018 20-foot equivalent units during the month.
SCPA handled 104,792 pier containers last month, breaking the record of 104,003 containers that was set in May 2015. Compared to January 2016, container volume is up 28 percent. As the second half of the fiscal year begins, container volume is up 8 percent compared to the same time period last year, according to SCPA.
Established by the state’s General Assembly, SCPA owns and operates port facilities in Charleston, Georgetown and Greer and employs 187,000 people. It generates close to $53 billion annually.
