An "unwavering support to service members and military families" has earned the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce a designation as a "Great American Defense Community" from the Association of Defense Communities (ADC).
"We are proud that the Lowcountry community has been honored and recognized as a Great American Defense Community this year by the Association of Defense Communities," Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce Chief Advancement Officer Mary Graham said. "This designation validates the many organizations and individuals who contribute their unwavering support to our service members, veterans and military families who live and serve in the Lowcountry."
The Chamber nominated the region because of its supportive community and the many public and private partnerships that support Joint Base Charleston, military members, their families and veterans. The nomination was supported by letters from Sens. Lindsay Graham (R-SC) and Tim Scott (R-SC), Rep. Mark Sanford (R-SC), the South Carolina Military Base Task Force and other national, state and local officials.
The Charleston region joins seven other Great American Defense Communities.
From now until June, the eight communities will host a local event celebrating its recognition and the people and organizations who make them great communities for service members and their families.
The six months of celebrations will lead to a reception and breakfast during the Defense Communities National Summit, June 19-21, in Washington, D.C.
