Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin recently was honored with a Walgreens Happy & Healthy Communities Champion Award.

“This year, one of my goals is to treat my body like the temple it is, so I’m excited to be off to a great start by being selected as a Walgreens Happy & Healthy Communities Champion Award recipient,” Benjamin said. “Your health, both mental and physical, is a critical component of your life, so it’s important to give it the attention it deserves. I’m encouraging all citizens to lead happier and healthier lives.”

Walgreens chooses mayors from around the country to receive these awards. The award recognizes those who have taken time to promote wellness and healthy lifestyles within their communities. Benjamin was chosen thanks to his work with Let’s Move! Columbia, an effort he started  to promote healthy lifestyles in children and to combat childhood obesity. In 2015, Columbia ranked first on the list of "Let's Move" cities by the National League of Cities.

Benjamin, who was elected mayor in 2010, received the award at a special presentation at the Walgreens at 4467 Devine St.
