Columbia's Municipal Election Commission will hold a non-partisan special election Tuesday to fill the District 4 council seat.

Daniel Rickenmann and Jessica Lathren will face off for the remaining term of District 4 councilmember Leona Plaugh, who died this year after a two-year battle with cancer. The term ends on Dec. 31, 2017.

Plaugh, a lifelong resident of Columbia, served as the assistant city manager for 12 years and as city manager for two years. She was elected to the District 4 seat in 2010.

The deadline to cast absentee ballots is Friday, Dec. 30 at 5 p.m.

South Carolina law requires that voters provide a photo ID in order to vote. Free photo IDs are available at the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Richland County Voter Registrations Office. New residents who are registered to vote but have not updated their addresses can make those updates on Election Day and vote.
