Former South Carolina Film Commissioner, professional photographer and location scout Jeff Monks spent the day with Aiken Chamber Information Services Coordinator Melissa Viola while shooting potential movie locations.
“Aiken’s unique horse culture and the fact that Aiken is so active and full of life make it an interesting location,” Monks said. “The location creates the mood of a film and giving production companies creative options for filming helps the state attract the industry and its investment to an area.”
Monks pointed out that at least half of a film's budget is spent in the community. An average film budget of $30 million could bring $15 million into the area where the movie is filmed.
The SC Film Commission was updating its location photos to ensure that potential moviemakers would see updated files promoting Aiken and the surrounding area. The state has served as the backdrop for numerous print, movie and TV projects. Movies filmed in Aiken include the 1997 Disney remake of "That Darn Cat" and the 2007 film "Who's Your Caddy?"
“The Aiken Chamber is continually looking for avenues to build and diversify Aiken’s economy,” Chamber President/CEO J. David Jameson said. “Allocating the professional staff’s time to projects like this helps us further our mission.”
