The Winthrop Family Allendale/Hampton Fund of Coastal Community Foundation has presented $60,000 in grants to various nonprofits that serve residents of Allendale and Hampton counties.
In the past 15 years, the Winthrop Family Fund has awarded more than $500,000 to nonprofits in the area.
Fennell Elementary School is one of this year's recipients. It will expand its Community Technology Center's hours to include two evenings per week, which will allow more time for high-speed internet access for those in Yemassee. Otherwise, the nearest public facility for internet access is 20 miles away.
These evening sessions will be staffed by teachers and assistants who to help with job applications, GED coursework and other needs. The grant will also help replace old computers.
Another grant recipient is United Ministries of Hampton County's Teen After School Center, which tutors and mentors at-risk youth. The program aims to keep kids in school while teaching them skills to help improve their relationships with others, as well as their sense of accountability.
The Winthrop Family Allendale/Hampton Fund was created in memory of Sarah Winthrop to provide a permanent source of funding to support many charitable programs. For more information about the fund, visit www.coastalcommunityfoundation.org.
