Katherine Pastor, the 2016 School Counselor of the Year, has joined the corporate board of advisers of Vireo Labs.
The education tech startup is focused on connecting people with colleges that offer programs in their career path.
Pastor was honored by First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House in January. The American School Counselor Association presented her with the award.
In addition to Pastor, who is a counselor at Flagstaff High School in Arizona, Vireo has connected 200 school counselors and teachers to the beta version of its C'reer app. The free mobile application and platform will use chat to connect people and college representatives.
"Katherine's expertise and passion for helping students succeed academically and personally is unparalleled," Vireo Labs co-founder and CEO Jose Mallabo said. "We're incredibly honored to have her be part of our team. Katherine's perspective will keep us grounded in our number one focus as a company to help students answer the most important question they face: 'What do I want to be when I grow up?'"
The Charleston-based firm is an early stage startup. C'reer is its first mobile product.
