John Darby, president and CEO of the Beach Co., was featured on South Carolina Business Review, a business segment of South Carolina Public Radio.
Darby was on the show to talk about the Beach Co.’s growth.
The five-generation, family-owned company started 70 years ago on the Isle of Palms and now owns an extensive portfolio of real estate including properties on King Street in Charleston. The segment also included Darby’s expertise on the current state of the real estate industry in South Carolina, noting that each city is different and had its own challenges.
“Every city is unique and has its benefits and challenges,” Darby said, noting the pro-growth, business-friendly progressive cities of Greenville and Columbia. “What a lot of people don’t realize is that we are actually governed by an independent board.”
Darby credits the leadership starting in the 1940s and still strong today. The company is uniquely structured in that the annual shareholders’ meeting also serves a family reunion.
“What a lot of people don’t realize is that we are actually governed by an independent board,” Darby said.
