Venus Williams has agreed to play in the 2017 Volvo Car Open on Daniel Island in Charleston April 1-9.
“I love Charleston!” Williams, who has 49 WTA titles, said. “It is one of my favorite stops throughout the year, where the fans always support and push me. I have so many wonderful memories and can’t wait to come back to play again in April.”
Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam winner, will join a field that includes Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig and Madison Keys, who is ranked No. 7 in the worlds. This is the ninth time that Williams has competed in Charleston, where her record is 20-7. In 2004, she won the tournament during her first appearance in Charleston.
“Venus is a seven-time Grand Slam champion, and one of the most recognizable and respected athletes, not only in tennis but in all sports,” Volvo Car Open Tournament Manager Eleanor Adams said. “After a career spanning two decades, and with an amazing resurgence over the past year, she’s still winning titles, competing at the top of the game and entertaining the fans. Few others have contributed to the history of woman’s tennis as Venus has, and it’s an honor to welcome her back to Charleston.”
