In preparation for Hurricane Matthew, the South Carolina Department of Transportation is making sure people are safe on and around movable and high bridges.
Swing bridges in coastal areas will be locked down for vehicle traffic and will not be opened for nautical traffic until the winds diminish under 25 miles per hour. This includes The Little River and Socastee swing bridges which have been locked down since Thursday. SCDOT and law enforcement are keeping an eye on conditions around the Ravenel, Holt, and Wando Bridges and will not allow semi-trucks, box delivery trucks, RVs and travel trailers to use them until sustained winds are under 30 mph.
Passenger vehicles will be allowed to cross these bridges until sustained winds hit 40 mph, but are warned to use extreme caution.
