To consider the workforce profile of Millennials — those born between 1982 and 2000 — the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce announces a “Business in your Backyard” series event for members on July 20 at Chamber offices.
This generation — currently ages 16 to 34 — is now the largest age group in the U.S. and represents both newer employees and those already navigating leadership positions. Millennials are expected to comprise three-quarters of the entire workforce by the year 2025.
The Chamber event will showcase a number of specialists to help business owners understand the group’s skills, goals and viewpoints and be prepared to craft work environments that are not only comfortable for the new cohorts but also meld generations’ styles together in the workplace.
Panelists will include Lindsay Mazell, branch manager for AppleOne Charleston, an Internet staffing firm for direct hire and temporary employees; Kevin Owens, a field recruiter for Verizon; and Len O’Neal, director of digital strategy for brand agency Rawle Murdy — an advertising, marketing, and PR firm “tucked happily into one of the coolest corners of the world — Charleston.”
Millennials have occasionally been stereotyped as car-avoidant, wellness-obsessed and/or altruistic as a whole, but research has also suggested either these age cohorts may not be that different from their immediate “Gen-X” predecessors, or—alternatively — that typecasting an entire age group simply may not be constructive.
