Laura Carson's Charleston, South Carolina-based web design company was launched in 1999 as Geeks in a Box — but after a revamping and rebranding campaign, the company is operating under the more mature moniker Kalson Media Group.
As part of an expansion initiative, Carson and her staff have also opened a new office in I’On in Mount Pleasant.
“Being a technologically savvy, female web design business owner 20 years ago was rare and did come with its challenges," Carson said. "But now, it’s refreshing to see so many women in the technology sector. I am embracing our new expansion, but deep down, I’ll always be a geek.”
Geeks in a Box was one of the first female-owned tech businesses to come on the scene in the Lowcountry. Carson built her first website in 1997 for retail stores she owned; she divested herself of those stores the following year and, at the age of 29 retired to Atlanta, Georgia.
She then went back to school to further her tech education at Ogelthorpe University, and after earning a degree there took a job at one of the country's leading web hosting providers. Several years later she moved back to Charleston to launch hew new tech company — and she is still there 16 years later.
Active in the community, Carson and her staff have provided pro bono website building services for the Charleston Animal Society (then the John Ancrum SPCA) and Pet Helpers; Carson provides volunteer services for the Center For Women.
Carson said her company's focus is on small businesses.
“What separates us from other people is our integrity," she said. "I know it sounds cliché, but it’s the truth. Focusing on truly helping the little guy is what we’re all about.”
