Barry Mizzell has been tapped to lead the athletics department at the Richland District Two School District in Blythewood, South Carolina.
As athletic director, Mizzell succeeds Vince Lowry, who has held the post since 2005. Mizzell began teaching physical education at the district's Richland Northeast High in 1992, where he also coached football and baseball and led baseball teams to six regional championships and the 2001 AAAA State Championship as well as acting as interim athletic director in 2004.
At Blythewood, Mizzell assisted the Bengals baseball team as it earned five regional championships (four consecutive times from 2011-14) and played in 2013's state championship game.
Presently, Mizzell is the head of Blythewood High's physical education department. He holds a bachelor of science degree in physical education from Baptist College.
"I’m very excited to be in a position to work for all of our teams on campus,” Mizzell said. “Being here since the school opened, I’ve been able to see the growth in all of our programs over the past 11 years. I’m looking forward to doing what I can to help that growth continue”.
Blythewood High principal Brenda Hafner is enthusiastic about Mizzell's promotion.
“Coach Mizzell brings a great deal of experience and leadership to his new position and we’re excited about the opportunities his selection will bring,” she said.
