Columbia's parks receive national recognition

Columbia named Playful City USA.

Columbia, South Carolina has been nationally recognized for its leaders’ commitment to maintaining the city’s parks and recreation spaces.

The City of Columbia was chosen for the third time as a Playful City USA. In its 10th year, this national program puts a spotlight on municipalities across the United States that put forth effort to be more playable.

“We are thrilled to recognize these communities that have invested their time and efforts to put kids first,” KaBOOM! CEO James Siegal said. “Balanced and active play is crucial to the well-being of kids and the communities that they thrive in. By integrating play into cities, the leaders of Playful Cities USA are working to attract and retain the thousands of families that want homes in close proximity to safe places to play.”

Under the leadership of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, Columbia boasts 60 year-round parks and green recreation spaces, all that require no admission fees. The department manages and maintains a total of 600 acres that house parks, dozens of tennis courts, several public swimming pools, spray pads and ponds.

The Parks and Recreation Department also offers many athletic, cultural arts, health and wellness and special programs.

In total, the Playful City USA program honored 257 communities this year. To see the complete list of honorees or for more information about the program, log on to
