The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce and Charleston Regional Development Alliance, assisted by representatives of Avalanche Consulting and McCallum Sweeney, have partnered to develop the One Region global competitiveness strategy.
The team behind the strategy has outlined its vision as acting globally as a unified region in an attempt to help businesses succeed. Additionally, the partners have identified eight regional dynamics that will help propel the Charleston region toward global competitiveness, including remedying traffic congestion, improving the skills of the area's workforce, making housing more affordable, increasing local wages, assisting employers with recruiting and retaining quality employees, and getting young professionals into the mix.
The strategy will be implemented in three phases. The first phase will be used to conduct a competitive assessment of the region. During the second phase, high impact clusters and competencies validation will be done. The third phase will see the strategy being implemented throughout the region.
The major issues addressed through this strategy will include affordability, economic momentum, equality and equity, global fluency, infrastructure, innovation and entrepreneurship, quality of place, and cultivating talent in the aerospace, advanced logistics, life sciences, automotive and information technology sectors.
Once the strategy is in place, its developers hope Charleston will experience a strengthening in its economy as well as enhanced entrepreneurial infrastructure, continued success for existing businesses in the region, more target investments that will lead to high impact cluster ecosystems, better access to learning opportunities and higher education, better policies and practices with regard to home ownership and growth for creative and cultural organizations.
Further, organizers want to see the strategy help with regional approaches for the region's natural environment and the development of employment centers near high-population areas.
