On April 5, community members are invited to an event celebrating the launch of Palmetto Railways.
The open house will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Cross Community Center, 1690 Old Highway 6 in Cross, South Carolina. Project details will be shared by workers and officials on the project.
The railway system is an offshoot of the South Carolina Department of Commerce. The kick-off will allow community members to take a look at a new industrial rail line that has been proposed. The railway would serve the Camp Hall Commerce Park in Berkeley County, South Carolina and would connect the park to railroad right-of-ways that are already in use in close proximity to Berkeley County’s Santee Cooper Cross Generating Station.
All construction on the project, which is expected to take about three years to complete, will be done by Palmetto Railways; the company will also own the railway and oversee its operations.
For more information about the Palmetto Railways project or to leave a comment or question, log on to www.palmettorailwayscamphallrail.com. An online meeting will be available March 29 through April 19.
Railway project officials are working closely with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to be sure the project maintains all qualifications under the National Environmental Policy Act.
