Trimble Private Brokerage
Trimble Private Brokerage, located at 49 Archdale St. in Charleston, South Carolina, recently expanded its office and services.
“We were in a much smaller office and have taken over the downstairs of a historic building in Charleston that was a former restaurant," James Trimble, broker in charge, told Palmetto Business Weekly. "It has beautiful hardwood floors and brick walls. We expanded to put in property management as well, managing HOAs and things like that.”
The company also sells real estate in the Charleston metro area and luxury property internationally — the company recently listed a farm in Tuscany.
“We do everything," Trimble said. "We sell $400,000 (houses), and we sell $10-million houses. We take (care) of everybody. Because you never know, the guy with the $100,000 house may have an uncle with a $10 million house.”
Trimble, who has more than 35 years in the industry, got his start in real estate in Maine, working as an agent for brokers in Castine and Brewer. In the early 1980s, he struck out on his own and began working out of his house. His business flourished, affording him the opportunity to move his business out of his home and into several nice office spaces.
Trimble Private Brokerage was founded seven years ago when Trimble moved down to Charleston from Maine.
“I was in international real estate for 35 years in Maine," Trimble said. "I had four offices up there and we did property all over, and then I sold that company to Sotheby’s and moved down here seven years ago and launched this company. We went into property management, which we never were in before, when I hired a property manager from a big company here.”
Trimble said he is using the same formula for success in Charleston as he did in Maine, and it is working very well.
“We are doing the same thing here now just by giving really good service and knocking ourselves out for our clients,” Trimble said. “I have been interviewed a lot; there has been a lot of press.”
Trimble has been featured in many publications, including Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, Time Magazine and the Los Angeles Times.
“I was on the cover of the Wall Street Journal and Time Magazine for doing kingdom-type properties, 15,000 acres for the barons of Wall Street," he said. "Also, one of my specialties is island sales worldwide."
Trimble bought his first island when he was 21, then sold it. He bought another and sold that one, too. Soon, people began asking him to sell their islands. So he got into the business and soon island sales became one of his specialties.
“There are only two people in the world who do that,” Trimble said. “Myself and a German gentleman named Farhad Vladi, and he is in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Hamburg, Germany. He sells islands in Tahiti and places like that. I’ve sold islands in Venice, Italy, Maine, Tennessee and places like that.”
Although he is fond of Maine, Trimble couldn’t be happier living in Charleston.
“I just loved it here, the whole scene and how we have constant sun all of the time," he said. "(It’s) sunny almost every single day. I just love it. I like the culture, the manners, all of the South."
