A variety of local businesses were recognized recently with Business of the Year Awards from the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce in South Carolina.
The 2015 award winners were recognized at the chamber's Economic Forecast Luncheon, which was sponsored by Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union.
The Small Business of the Year was the Dorchester Children’s Center, which has been in operation since 2003 and has grown to become an advocacy center that has earned national accreditation.
Today, the organization's operations are housed in a 16,000 square-foot facility where 22 people are employed; in 2015 the center served 1,208 children.
Summerville Medical Center was named the Large Business of the Year. The center opened in 1989; during the peak hours of last October's heavy rains and subsequent flooding it was one of two hospitals in the tri-county area that was able to receive and provide treatment for emergency department patients.
The Small Business of the Year finalists were Johnson & Wilson Real Estate Co. and Wingate by Wyndham at CSU; finalists in the Large Business of the Year category were Charleston Southern University and Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union.
Awards were presented by Summerville Chamber Board Chair Jim McDaniel and chamber president and CEO Rita Berry.
