Columbia-based Sowell Gray Stepp & Laffitte LLC was named as one of the nation's premier law firms in U.S. News' Best Lawyers edition, an annual publication honoring the top law practices in major practice areas.

Sowell Gray was lauded with Tier One designation in commercial litigation, insurance law, personal injury litigation-defendants and workers’ compensation law-employers. Additionally, the practice received recognition in litigation-construction and product liability litigation-defendants.

Sowell Gray, launched in 1996, operates from the Vista district of Columbia, offering business and litigation representation in all state and federal trial and appellate courts in South Carolina.

U.S. News lists over 11,000 firms in 120 practice areas in 170 metropolitan areas and eight states, then ranks them based on criteria such as client and lawyer evaluations and peer reviews from leading attorneys in the same practice areas.

For a firm to be ranked, at least one of its attorneys must be included in the U.S. News Best Lawyers publication. Eight of Sowell Gray's attorneys -- Grady Beard, Tina Cundari, Betsy Gray, Becky Laffitte, Biff Sowell, Bobby Stepp, Monty Todd and Cal Watson -- made the cut, representing 10 areas of practice.

Gray was named the “Bet the Company” Litigation Lawyer of the Year; and Laffitte was Insurance Law Lawyer of the Year.
