Bennett Hofford Construction Co. recently completed the first phase of heating and air conditioning work at the former Navy Hospital in North Charleston, South Carolina, which is being redeveloped into the Chicora Life Center.
The $29 million redevelopment project will create a hub for a variety of social services, including social, government and non-profit care facilities. The project is being funded through private investments.
Bennett Hofford was awarded an approximately $2.7 million contract in September to put in new HVAC systems in the first phase of the project.
“Customers, clients and the general public who travel to the Chicora Life Center will find a very positive experience," North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey said. "It is easy to access and a convenient combination of services all in one location."
The first phase of the project will encompass offices for the County of Charleston, Department of Mental Health and the Franklin C. Fetter Health Clinic.
Work is scheduled for completion by Dec. 1, with crews currently ahead of schedule.
The newly hired onsite project manager for Bennett Hofford is Ray Kirby, who has more than two decades of commercial construction experience gained through projects in the Carolinas, Tennessee, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New York, Oklahoma and Texas.
"We are thrilled to hire someone with Ray's experience and talent — and to have him immediately start to oversee this important project,” Hank Hofford, president of Bennett Hofford, said.
Bennett Hofford has been in operation for more than 30 years and has overseen a variety of projects throughout South Carolina and the Caribbean.
