Dollar Tree Inc. has announced plans to open distribution operations in the Upstate Corporate Park, which is part of both Cherokee and Spartanburg counties in South Carolina.

The $104.4-million investment is forecasted to create 400 new jobs over the next five years.

Dollar Tree operates more than 13,600 stores across 48 states and five Canadian provinces. A Fortune 500 company, Dollar Tree has served North America for more than 28 years.

Dollar Tree will build new facilities in upstate South Carolina for the distribution operations. Work on a 1.5-million-square-foot facility will begin this month, and hiring for the associated jobs will begin in the first quarter of 2016.

“Dollar Tree is a large organization with tremendous growth opportunities ahead of us," Dollar Tree CEO Bob Sasser said.

Dollar Tree officials have been "extremely impressed with the South Carolina transportation infrastructure," according to Dollar Tree Chief Logistics Officer Stephen W. White.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Halet called Dollar Tree's decision to build the distribution center "a real reason to celebrate."

South Carolina's secretary of commerce, Bobby Hitt, agreed.

“We’re excited to have such a successful, nationally recognized company select the South Carolina for a major distribution operation, and I look forward to supporting their future growth and success in our state," Hitt said.
