The South Carolina Board of Health and Environmental Control announced last week that Catherine Heigel has been appointed director of the of the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).
“The selection of Catherine Heigel to lead DHEC reaffirms the Board’s commitment to the agency and the people of South Carolina,” Board Chairman Allen Amsler said.
Heigel currently serves as general counsel and corporate strategies officer for Elliott Davis Decosimo LLC. She previously served as president of Duke Energy South Carolina. She has a bachelor of arts from the University of South Carolina and a law degree from Ohio State University.
“With her strong background and leadership skills, we are confident in Heigel’s ability to successfully continue the Board’s vision and propel the agency forward,” Amsler said. “Heigel’s expertise and knowledge in law and management will serve as valuable assets for the future of DHEC as we continue our work to promote and protect the health of the public and the environment.”
The DHEC director is chosen by the board to serve a four-year term. The appointment is subject to approval by the governor and the advice and consent of the state Senate. Amsler said 99 applications were reviewed during the nationwide search.
