Hilton Head, South Carolina, recently was ranked as the fifth best island in the United States in TripAdvisors' 2015 Travelers’ Choice Awards.
Maui, Hawaii, received first place. The island of Hawaii received second place. Kauai, Hawaii was named third, and Key West, Florida is listed as the fourth best island.
Hilton Head was commended for the variety it offers vacationers. It has been known as a paradise for golfers for a long time, but it has a wide variety of other sporting options for visitors to partake in, including polo, tennis and volleyball. Throughout the year, Hilton Head also hosts several prestigious sporting events on the island's green areas and sunny beaches.
Visitors and local residents also can enjoy the natural wonders of Hilton Head, including the Sea Pines Forest Reserve, which provides a close view of a swamp without the mess of getting muddy.
Pedestrians at Hilton Head enjoy raised boardwalks, sightseers favor Harbourtown Lighthouse, and there are first-class hotels and resorts throughout the region.
The remaining five islands that were honored include Marco Island, Florida; Key Largo, Florida; Chincoteague Island, Virginia; San Juan Island, Washington; and Mackinac Island, Michigan.
