Columbia to use grant for upward-mobility program

The City of Columbia has received a $75,000 grant from the Assets for Independence Program, and the city will match the grant, for a total of $150,000, which will be used for the city's Individual Development Account Program (IDA).

The IDA program allows individuals to use their savings and match money toward the purchase of a home, small business or post-secondary education.

To qualify, applicants must live within the city's limits, must be living at 200 percent of the federal poverty line, must have $10,000 or less in household assets; and must save $1,000 over a six-month period and attend financial literacy and asset training.

Successful participants will be eligible for a $3,000 match to purchase their first home, start a small business or go back to school.

Those interested may apply until the funds are fully used.
