County representatives attend annual trusts meeting in Myrtle Beach, S.C.


Over 100 county officials had the chance to learn about risk management at the South Carolina Counties Workers’ Compensation Trust (SCCWCT) and South Carolina Counties Property and Liability Trust (SCCP&LT) annual Insurance Trusts Membership Meeting, held on Jan. 28 and 29 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

South Carolina Association of Counties' (SCAC) Director of Insurance Services, Robert Collins, started the event with a forum regarding the value of obtaining complete claims histories from insurers.

Emphasizing that counties require data on claim payments in order to be able to focus risk management strategy and safety efforts in the future, Collins invoked the “insurers’ mantra” of “paid plus reserves equals total incurred” to remind the audience of priorities in gathering accurate claims histories.

Linda Edwards of Gignilliat Savitz & Bettis Law Firm offered an update on employment law issues. SCAC Risk Manager for the Trusts Robert E. Benfield and SCAC Director of Risk Management Services John D. Henderson gave an update on areas of risk management on which members should focus.

David Morrison of Morrison Law Firm and John V. Jervey, SCAC’s SCCP Claims Manager, presented on governmental liability in regard to roadways, and Van Henson, of South Carolina's Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), reported on recent OSHA developments and upcoming training opportunities.

Highlighting the event was the presentation of risk management awards. The top award -- "Most Improved County" -- went to Kershaw County.
