On Saturday at 8:30 p.m, the City of Columbia will join hundreds of millions of other cities, businesses and organizations worldwide in celebrating Earth Hour.
The city will turn off all nonessential lights in city buildings for one hour.
The city is encouraging citizens to participate in the event by turning off lights and unplugging electrical appliances between the hours of 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. The city also wants citizens who are participating to encourage others to take part in Earth Hour.
In addition to Earth Hour, Columbia has launched other efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by increasing energy efficiency, such as establishing the Climate Protection Action Campaign (CPAC), retrofitting light fixtures in all city facilities and planting trees through the 10,000 Trees program.
