Columbia ranks third on the list of Livability.com's annual 10 Best College Towns list.
Towns on the list had to have at least three colleges and were ranked according to the number of 20-somethings living there, as well as housing affordability, percentage of jobs in the education sector, plus nightlife and diversity. Last year, Columbia ranked eighth.
The Charlotte suburb of Tega Cay is the most successful in the state based on median income, poverty rates and unemployment rates, according to the career information website Zippia. The others in the Top 5 list are Mount Pleasant, Hilton Head Island, Mauldin and Simpsonville.
Charleston was also ranked the top city for dog lovers, according to a list in Realtor magazine by The National Association of Realtors. NAR researchers measured “the percentage of households that own a dog as well as the number of dog parks and trails, dog-friendly restaurants, pet stores, and dog walkers.” Sixty-eight percent of Charleston homes include at least one dog.
Charleston was also touted as America’s friendliest city in a survey of Conde Nast Traveler readers.
“Everything in Charleston is perfectly designed for visitors to be comfortable, safe and well taken care of,” said one reader.
