Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and Kohl’s Buckle Buddies recently released tips as well as checks for car seat safety throughout the state of South Carolina, hoping to reduce the risk of injury for children.
The campaign is in honor of National Child Passenger Safety Week from Sept. 18-24. For the campaign, Kohl’s Buckle Buddies will offer free Car Seat Safety Classes and Car Seat Check Events around the state.
Statistics show that four out of five car seats in South Carolina are either used improperly or installed inadequately. When this happens, children are at significantly more risk for injuries.
“In the last quarter, we have checked 315 car seats,” Kevin Poore, Buckle Buddies coordinator, said. “The majority of those have something wrong. People don’t realize that car seats need to be checked and must be installed properly to protect children. Most parents try to do what seems right to them, but it may not be correct or safe. It is best to have an expert check your child’s car seat.”
Palmetto Children’s Hospital has been key to this campaign and event. Its stake in the campaign is significant, with more than 150,000 children’s visits to the hospital each year.
