Chicora Life Center manager Doug Durbano made a formal statement on Thursday, Oct. 8 after making a presentation to the Charleston County Board’s Finance Committee about the progress of the historic redevelopment project.
“Our team was pleased to update the Finance Committee today on the continued progress of the Chicora Life Center," Durbano said. "We are meeting our goals, hitting our milestones, and acting in good faith under the original agreements reached with the County in 2014."
Durbano said more than $18 million in private investments had been made toward the project, which will see the transformation of an abandoned naval hospital into a community social services hub.
“While we have at times sensed a potential adversarial tone from some on the county board, as well as a desire to ‘move the goal posts’ on us from the original agreements, we remain focused on finalizing this vital project that will create a vital social services hub for the entire community," Durbano said. "We came for clarification tonight for everyone and hopefully that was achieved.”
The Chicora Life Center represents an investment of more than $29 million in the property, which iws located in the heart of Charleston County.
