Viscid Surf, a retail business on Johns Island, has launched a new line of organic, hand-poured surf waxes.
The new products are available only at www.viscidsurf.com.
The formula was developed and produced by Kevin Schmoll, a local graphic designer and surfer who grew up in Charleston.
“As a surfer I always found it strange that a majority of surf waxes are petroleum-based and I just wanted to use a product that was more environmentally friendly,” Schmoll said. “After testing countless samples I found that a beeswax-based product worked just as great and still gave a comparable grip and bumpy texture but had an added benefit of stickiness.”
Four different waxes are offered at Viscid Surf. They are Base, Cold Water, Warm Water and Tropical Water. The formulas run the gamut from soft to hard and can be used in a variety of water temperatures. Three-packs of waxes sell for $6 and are shipped in packaging made from recycled paper.
The beeswax used in the products is procured from a beekeeper on Johns Island.
“Whenever possible, I’ve gone out of my way to source as many of the ingredients as I can locally," Schmoll said.
