SCE&G recently donated $30,000 to a renovated playground and green space at McMahon Playground in Hampton Park.
During the previous year, Charleston Parks Conservancy and the City of Charleston collaborated with one another as well as the surrounding neighborhoods to develop a plan to improve the McMahon Playground in Hampton Park. The plan also seeks to improve the surrounding area near the Cleveland Street entryway to the park.
The Conservancy and the residents of the neighborhood held fundraisers for the new equipment and layout of the playground. SCE&G’s donation will pay for shade trees, garden areas, benches, and pathways to be scattered through the now-vacant space located nearby the Cleveland Street playground.
The total sum from the fundraisers and the donation from SCE&G amounts to approximately $77,000. This leaves just $23,000 that still needs to be raised for the project.
“We are very pleased to be a part of this renovation project at Hampton Park,” Danny Kassis, SCE&G Vice President of Customer Relations and Renewables, said. “The shade trees, benches and landscaping will not only beautify the space next to the new playground, but we believe it will help attract even more people to the open space that has been a treasure of the City of Charleston for many years.”
“We are incredibly grateful to SCE&G for their commitment to Hampton Park,” Harry Lesesne, Conservancy Executive Director, said. “Their donation will enable the creation of a beautifully restored new space that will be enjoyed by children and families for decades to come.”
